October's Enchantment

The Veil Witch Wakes

The light has gone cold and orange. The candle burns differently now — lower, slower, as if it too is listening. October belongs to the Veil Witch, and she has been waiting at the edge of the season, patient as obsidian, quiet as bone.

What the Witch Notices

The Candle Burns Differently

She notices it first at her desk — the flame doesn't dance the way it did in summer. It pools and steadies, as if holding its breath. She reaches for the obsidian on her shelf without thinking. Some months you light a candle for warmth. October, you light it to be seen by what is passing through.

The Window Light Has Changed

The afternoon light comes in low and amber now, casting long shadows across her notebooks. She finds herself writing differently — slower, with more pauses. The Hunter's Moon rises early and enormous. She leaves the curtain open. There are things worth watching for.

She Reaches for Rosemary

The herb jar she keeps by her pen cup — she's been reaching for the rosemary sprig more than usual. For remembrance, she knows. October is the month the ancestors feel close. She sets a small apple on the corner of her desk. An offering. A hello.

A Small Ceremony

The October Ritual

A simple desk practice for the thinning veil. No elaborate tools required — only attention, and a willingness to listen.

I

Clear the Surface

Before you begin, clear your desk completely. Wipe it down with intention. This is not tidying — it is making space. The veil thins in October, and what crosses through deserves a clean threshold.

II

Light the Candle

Place a single candle at the center of your desk. Black or deep orange, if you have it. Light it and speak aloud the name of someone you wish to remember. Then sit quietly for a moment. Let the flame do the rest.

III

Write What You Release

Take a scrap of paper — not your good notebook — and write one thing you are ready to release before the year ends. A habit, a fear, a story you've been telling yourself. Fold it once. Set it beside the candle. You don't have to burn it. Just naming it is enough.

IV

Set the Offering

Place something small on your desk as an offering to what has passed: an apple slice, a sprig of rosemary, a photograph. Leave it overnight. In the morning, return it to the earth — the garden, the compost, the windowsill soil. The gesture closes the circle.
